What Causes the President to Age Faster Once in Office?

I know the title of this article is going to turn a lot of heads. A lot of people may think that this is not true. A lot of people might think that this is an exaggeration. Well, to those people, I want you to look at pictures of candidate Barack Obama when he was running for the US senate for Illinois in 2004. Now, I want you to look at his pictures when he was campaigning for the presidency before 2008.

After you’ve looked at those pictures, I want you to scan photos of Obama during his 8 year presidency. Do you see the difference? Well, it should jump out at you. The guy got grayer and grayer and his age wasn’t just revealed in his hair color. It was also revealed in his face.

The man aged dramatically during his 8 year presidency. In fact, when you look at the person who replaced him, Mr. Donald Trump, there’s already a marked difference in facial appearance between Trump in 2016 and Trump today.

There’s something about the US presidency that ages people rapidly. Of course, we really can’t get to the definitive cause because it might be classified. But here are some common sense guesses as to what causes the president to age faster once in office.

Stress

This should be a no brainer. If you are the president of the United States, you are, de facto, the most powerful person on the planet. Hands down. Even leaders from other countries who are very big on autonomy and national pride will concede this point.

They can’t match the United States. First, the US is the economic powerhouse of the world. Nothing even comes close. A lot of people talk a big game about China. But China is just a shadow of the United States when it comes to spending power, financing power and overall economic strength. Nobody comes close.

When it comes to the military? Get out of here! Nobody is even within shooting range of the United States. This is due to the fact that the US, year after year, devotes a significant chunk of its national budget to defense.

A lot of people are saying it’s unwarranted. The US defense budget every single year is more than the defense budgets of several countries, and I’m talking about developed countries here. I’m not talking about starving countries combined.

Given this fact, a lot of people are saying that this is just wasted spending. Well, it’s obvious why the US is spending so much on its military because the military creates a lot of jobs. It also projects US strength throughout the world.

At the end of the day, sweet words can only go so far. But when you have a gun pointed at somebody’s head and that person can see the barrel of that gun, your point is understood loud and clear. Managing such a behemoth and such a powerful organization is going to take years off your life.

Personally, I’m surprised that Obama doesn’t look more aged than he does. You have to understand that the president of the United States is responsible for everything that goes on in the United States and throughout the world.

The US has its finger on so many pies throughout the world that it’s basically the world’s cop. So when you look at the totality of all the responsibilities, you can see the tremendous amount of pressure. You don’t want to be wrong. You don’t want to be blamed when something goes south. You don’t want to be the person that they try to back stab because they disagree with you. So this is going to get on your nerves.

Scheduling

When you’re president, you’re basically all over the place. If you love to travel, you may be tempted to think that you would love the presidency. Well, think again. When a president travels, it’s not what you think.

Sure there are lots of photo opportunities like a president going to a national monument or some sort of national landmark and checking out the sites. But those are photo opportunities. Those are actually working sessions for the president.

He’s not kicking back and relaxing after the photo shoot. No! He gets back on the plane and gets back to the United States or, more often, goes to the next country on his itinerary. It is a grueling job. It’s not like you’re 20 years old, just out of college and you have a few bucks to spare. So you hop on a bus and check out all 50 American states.

You go backpacking. You sleep at a hostel. You meet up with members of the opposite sex and have a good time in many different states. No! It’s not like that. It’s all work all the time.

Politics

Another thing that ages the US president is politics. You have to understand that the moment you take that seat, the opposing party will move heaven and hell to make your life hell. They’ll call you out on every bad move you make. Even the good moves you make are going to be criticized.

They’re going to try their best to make your life hell. And it doesn’t really matter which party is in power. You can bet that the other party is going to give the current party in power hell. If you need proof of this, just look at Obama’s presidency.

From day 1, the republican said that they’re going to basically obstruct and check him every step of the way and that’s precisely what they did. Now, it’s the democrats turn with Donald Trump. With Donald Trump, democrats took it to a whole other level.

They’re basically trying to get the government to investigate Trump and boot him out of office. They didn’t do that with Obama. But that just goes to show you the tremendous amount of stress involved with the job.

This is why a lot of people who would otherwise be qualified for the presidency don’t even think about it in a million years. It’s just too much bother than it’s worth.
